Prostitution: A major cause of crime in Odikoman

Residents of Nungua-Odikoman, a suburb of Accra have expressed their grief and fear on the sudden invasion of prostitutes in their communities which has further led to an increase in other crimes like armed robbery and drug dealing.

Speaking to the chief of Nungua-Odikoman, Nii Agyeman Kaakado, who has apparently lived in the community for the past 30 years, he said that the community used to be peaceful and quiet. He expressed his grief as he is shocked at the rate at which prostitution has taken over the community.

When gijonlinenews spoke to ten residents of the community, they couldn’t hide their fear. “We literally have to lock ourselves in the room as early as 9:00pm”, they said. This fear has caused some residents to consider relocating to safer communities.

An eye witness, Mr. Daniel Akrofi, who owns a shop right at the standpoint of these prostitutes, told gijonlinenews what he sees each and every night. “I always have interactions with these girls because they mostly buy from me”, he said. He claims the youngest amongst these girls could be 13 years of age.

Mr. Akrofi explained that due to the interaction he has had with some these girls; he could say that most of them are Ghanaians and Nigerians. These girls, popularly known “Abrefi girls” have a guest house around where they live. According to him, there has been a number of attacks and drug dealings around that place which he has witnessed a number of them. This has caused shops around that place to close early due to fear.

Felicia Borquaye, a woman who has had a shop around that area for 5 years told daily express that she now closes up as early as 8:30pm as she was attacked by a group of guys not long ago. She believes these guys are all part of the groups that have trouped in together with the prostitutes.

When we spoke to the assembly man of Odikoman, Mr. Romeo, he said that the police have been alerted and they are hoping they do something about this soon, even though from time to time there are patrol cars that come around to ensure the safety of the residents.

Meanwhile the Chief Inspector of the Kpeshie Divisional Police Station, Inspector Kumi, said that crime is on the rise in ga communities like Labadi, Osu, Teshie and Nungua and advices that people be on the alert. “A patrol team is sent out at night to assure the safety of the residents of these communities as a way of curbing crime”, he said.

Concerning the prostitutes, he said they have been raided on several occasions and yet they keep coming back. Measures are being taken to make sure they are gone completely in order to ensure the peace and safety of the residents in Odikoman.
